Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 INDOCTRINATE Interview

  • February 7, 2014
  • by PE Admin
  • · Interviews · PE Web Zine

INDOCTRINATE hail from Austria and are a political (anti-fascist, anti-sexist, anti-authoritarian and animal friendly) DIY crust punk band who play a catchy, abrasive and diversified blend of hardcore punk and d-beat/crust. Their music also incorporates elements from grindcore, post-hardcore, doom/sludge and other sub-genres of metal. They recently released a new 7” called “… and all hail to progress and efficiency” on Profane Existence. It is their first release for PE and the band as well as the label are quite excited about this collaborative effort. The record was co-released with several other fine DIY punk labels from around the globe.   – Interviewed by Lisa H.  CLICK HERE TO GET A COPY

a1217557987_10PE: So you’ve just finished recording your newest release, a 7” going by the name of “… and alll hail to progress and efficiency”. Are you satisfied how it turned out?

Indoctrinate: Yes we are. We think the songs are cool and we like how the recordings turned out. It took us quite some time to get them done and to find labels which would contribute to the release. In the end we’re really happy to have all these great DIY labels from around the world behind us and supporting us. Also, we like the overall design of the record and how it goes together with the content.

PE: Your lyrics are mostly concerned with socio-political issues. Why do you think it’s important to keep writing about such topics? Could you imagine ever writing a feel-good party song or a love song? Do you think that music can actually bring about change?

Indoctrinate: We think it is important to write about these things because they concern all of us. Fucked up things happen all the time, everywhere, all around us and it’s not that we have a choice but in one way or another we have to face them. So we think it’s very important to draw attention to certain political/environmental/social issues because in order to be able to change things we have to understand them/know about them first. There are so many issues one could write about and sometimes it’s quite hard to pick just one of them. So yeah we think that music can actually bring about change in the sense that it can create awareness, unite people and inspire (direct) action. Hmm…a love song…what a great idea… No, seriously, I think there are so many more important current issues to address and there are just way too many ridiculous feel-good party or love songs out there so we will spare you from another one of those. Haha!

PE: So is this one of the reasons why you choose to make music? What other influences are there?

Indoctrinate: Yeah this is definitely one of the reasons why we do what we do. Concerning other influences I would say the world around us, especially when it comes to writing lyrics, is a big influence since we try to talk about things that are happening and that need our attention (e.g. animal/human rights, war, neo-liberalism, the prison system, environmentalism, and so on). Music-wise there are a lot of bands and musicians that are an inspiration for us but to name all of them would be pretty useless. We just wanna play heavy music that besides being brutal (wow!) has got a certain groove and feel to it.

PE: What do you think about the political and environmental situation of the world in general? Do you think that the recent riots in Egypt, France, Ukraine or Hamburg (Germany) could open the door to major changes in global politics?

Indoctrinate: In general I think that the current situation of the world does not look very promising. Although all the recent riots, protests and uprisings show us that people are in fact trying to bring about change in the world. And one can only hope that all these events in the long run somehow do bring about (for the lack of a better word let’s say revolutionary) change and an end to poverty and oppression on a worldwide scale. The least these events do teach us is that we as human beings are capable of autonomy and self-governance (when you think about Occupy and similar movements for instance).

PE: Lets talk about your music again: Who does the songwriting in your band? How do your ideas for lyrics and tunes evolve into actual songs? Could you describe the process for us?

Indoctrinate: We arrange the songs together but usually our guitar player/singer has already a certain pre-existing structure in mind which he tries to communicate to the others sometimes more sometimes less effectively.

PE: How would you describe the underground scene in Austria? Do you get the chance to perform a lot? Are there any remarkable differences if you compare your home country to other places that you have played in?

Indoctrinate: Well, I guess the biggest scene’s in Vienna although it’s actually not that big compared to other (for instance European) cities. And there are a few venues (like EKH, Venster99, Arena or Pankahyttn) and DIY promoters who set up shows in the city and surrounding areas. So it’s quite a good scene. Other cities like Graz, Linz and Innsbruck also do have a vibrant punk scene. As far as politics are concerned there are for example local groups of Food not Bombs and the Anarchist Black Cross. Yeah, you do get the chance to play live, especially in Vienna where you got a lot of shows. Hmm differences? There are some minor differences, of course, but I wouldn’t say other places are so much different when it comes to shows.

PE: Do you worry about the future? Do you think there’ll be a time when you will be “too old” for punk-rock, when you’ ll be happy to marry and settle down with your wife, your three kids, the dog and a big-ass plasma TV?

Indoctrinate: Yep, we do worry about the future. A lot. But there’s still hope I guess. Oh yeah, that reminds me, I gotta go and watch some MTV on my big-ass plasma TV!

PE: Well, thanks so much for taking the time to answer these questions. Hopefully the readers will have a chance to see you performing live sometime soon! Do you want to make any last comments or give a shout-out to anyone?

Indoctrinate: Thank you! And thanks for the support everyone! We really appreciate it. And you can keep up with what we’re doing here: https://www.facebook.com/indoctrinate.crust indoctrinate.bandcamp.com or drop us a line here: indoctrinate@riseup.net

0 Rod Coronado Wolf Sab tour report back: Still Defending the Wild

by Comrade Black

The Anishinaabe of what is now called Michigan state in the colonial tongue are opposed to the killing of any wolves on their  territories, and wish to make their territories a wolf sanctuary.

This was the message that Rod Coronado (Pascuae Yaqui Nation) just toured speaking about. He is working with others to form a grassrroots campaign to stop the killing of wolves, and has begun working with the Anishinaabe to assist them in their efforts to protect the wolves within their territories.

From what Rod said, The Anishinaabe come from a deep spiritual connection to the wolf, and the wolf is sacred to them. Rod is hoping to help them raise funds to put up signs designed by the youth of the Anishinaabe community; declaring their territories a sanctuary and forbidding hunting. As well as hoping to help in many other legal ways. He, and the NW Hunt Saboteurs are doing talks and workshops around the country to protect wolves everywhere, and to build diverse strategies to save the wolves from both sport hunting, and from being “destroyed” by government departments which are funded primarily by hunters and ranchers.

I just followed 3 days of the Rod Coronado/Hunt Sab tour, and it was an amazing experience. I hope I can find ways to assist in their work, as well as ways to bring back what I learned from them to help in campaign in my own community.

The first time I met Rod, his brother was with him, and his brother asked me “so what do you hope to get out of these talks.” I had no answer – but I am glad he asked as I think it made me more conscious and receptive, and has helped me to remember this is not about what I can get, but what I can do with that to give back.

1 Controled Entry — Imaginary Lines

  • February 1, 2014

by Comrade Black Comrade PE

Yesterday I crossed the colonial imaginary line which divides the stolen territory claimed by one colonial nation state from the territory of another. My experiences crossing the border haven’t been too extreme, but they are interesting in the context of class, and how it intersects with race and gender.

A few months ago while on tour with Layla AbdelRahim, as I went through customs the guard asked how long I would be in the country, then proceeded to ask “what kind of job do you have that lets you take an entire work week off?” I replied that I am on disability, at which point he looked away, gesturing dismissively with his hand to move along. A bit surprised I asked unsure “were you still going to search my bag?” (which was open beside me). Again, continuing to not even look at me he waved his hand in a manner suggesting to “get away from me.” I didn’t argue and proceeded to Seattle. Layla later joked that he must have been afraid he would catch my disability if he continued to interact with me.

Last night as I crossed through from Victoria again on way to Seattle to see Rod Coronado speak. This time I had a bit more trouble at immigration than the time before. I was one of the first

still dates in: Saturday Feb 1st Portland OR at PSU Student Union Room 238 7pm Sunday Feb 2nd Eugene OR at UO, room McKenzie 221 7pm Saturday March 1st Philly at Wooden Shoe Books and Records 7pm

in line in case there was any issues since I had heard horror stories from friends who had been interrogated for 6-9 hours when they tried to cross, so I wanted to be there early just in case.

The immigration officer this time was a woman of colour. She began with generic questions, and went to scan my passport, when her computer began having problems – so her supervisor – a white male- came to help. He was actually the same Immigration cop who processed me when I went through in October. As he was trying to help her with the computer, he asked why I was crossing; and as I said I was going to see Iron Lung and Despise You, he began talking to me about how much he liked metal, and the documentary Metal: A Headbangers Journey by Sam Dunn (a Victoria based metal head and film maker). He asked a bit about the bands I said I was going to see, and told me he once processed Lemmy crossing through on a flight at a San Diego border crossing.  “He was an interesting guy” the cop told me enthusiastically.

Everything was going ok until the woman who was the original border guard asked what I did for work. I replied I was on disability. Suddenly she seemed to become hostile, and began asking how much money I had, if I had been asked for proof of Ties and Equities last time I went through, and so on. “So you don’t have much money for hotels, are you just planning to stay on the streets?” I told her 2 or 3 more times I had a friend putting me up. She continued asking if I had been arrested ever, to which I replied I hadn’t (even though I was a bit unsure if a few things would come up or not from when the Integrated Security Unit for the 2010 Olympics game was harassing me and following me, or when I was volunteering with SHAC Canada in 2006). to my relief nothing did and I continued to act as casual as possible. At this point she asked if I was ever arrested for drugs, to which I replied “no, I am actually what is called straightedge, I haven’t even smoked in 10 years.” Surprisingly to me, she didn’t drop the subject and persisted “have you ever received any treatment for your addictions?” and so on the questions continued.

The supervise was still near by, and came back over towards her, she told him she was concerned I didn’t have much money with me. “I don’t think there is any reason to deny him entry” he told her. So instead she gave me a controlled entry, which involved finger printing me, photographing, and telling me I had to return by the 4rth or else (what else I am not sure exactly).

How much did class, gender and race play into the outcome of this experience? I have to wonder if I hadn’t been a white male, if the supervise wasn’t also a white male, would I have been denied entry? On the other hand, if I hadn’t looked poor with my black patched cloths, tattoos and locked hair, and more so if told her I was on disability; would I have had so much trouble? Borders are an inherently racist construct; if I had told the guards I was coming over to see a Indigenous man speak about defending wildlife rather than to see some bands in a scene where one could safely assume they are likely white males – would I have been allowed to enter?

A year ago I was on welfare waiting for my disability application to be approved (and hoping it wouldn’t be denied). Until then, traveling wasn’t even a possibility I considered real. On $610 a month, I couldn’t even afford to put in the passport application, never mind ferry costs, bus, or food. The only travel I oculd afford was my thumb. The interplay of class, race, and gender – of privilege and oppression under capitalism; within a colonial civilization is complex and anything but just. My experiences were mild in comparison to what many racialized people and those who present in a way that is visually queer often experience, yet they served me as an interesting examination of power and privilege.

In the end I am reminded of a line by Crass ”
Are we really so dumb, so cowered into submission
That not only are we prepared to eat shit
We’re also prepared to say thanks for the privilege?”

When I was a lot younger and getting really into anarchp-punk, one of the biggest influences on me at the time was a little known band from Edmonton (where I lived) called Self Rule.

I still think they have one of the best names of all time. They were an explicitly anarchist band, most were straightedge (except one member who was still trying to quit smoking, and later did), I think all were vegan too. They were awesome live – with incredible energy, jumping 3 feet in the air during songs with multiple vocalists; but the recordings never translated as well. Anyways I loved them. They were one of my favorite bands.

When I first moved to Victoria, about the second day I was here I saw a poster for a show with Self Rule and Iskra, and a band I had never heard of called Mechanichal Separation. I Had just seen Self Rule a week before in Edmonton, so they were quite surprised when they saw me at the Victoria show at the Hillside house. It was a blast, and I met a lot of people at that show who have stayed my friends ever since.

Self Rule had a number of members come and go over the years, but really they were comprised of 3 people from the beginning, and the rest just came and went. One of those 3 was an Edmonton punk named Dave. a good guy all around, even if we didn’t always see eye to eye, I learned a hell of a lot from Dave.

Today I just heard Dave passed away. I don’t know how. I do know it is a loss to the Alberta punk community. I wasn’t really friends with Dave, we occasionally went for coffee years back at which time we would argue over bands, he would introduce me to new bands (many of which I still listen to), and I was a fan of his band (still am) even if every time I told him they played a rad show he would be like “really, I thought we sucked.”
So this is me sending my condolences out to his friends. I know he meant a lot to a lot of people. Dave was a good guy who contributed a lot to his community.

0 MISERY: THE BEGINNING EP-LP: REVIEW

misery_ep_cover  The crust punk veterans from the wintry polar vortex of Minnesota have returned to release yet another great record.  This time it’s a 6 song 30 minute album that’s very loosely considered an EP.  MISERY have had the same lineup for the past 25 years now, and is unique in the fact that all members take turn at lead vocals.  Very early in the beginning, the lead vocalist left the band to pursue other options with a band from NYC.  Although this other band may arguably have a bigger reputation than MISERY, the group crumbled due to a “difference of egos”.  This new offering, aptly titled The Beginning, features the original 5-piece lineup on 1/3 of the material here.  This is the band’s second release on Seattle based Inimical Records, and is the follow up to the highly acclaimed 2xLP “From Where The Sun Never Shines”, which was put out in 2012.
The record starts with 2 brand new tunes, title track The Beginning and Armageddon.  The Beginning utilizes heavy usage of clean guitar melodies, and starts with a baby’s wails before any vocals.  Musically the song seems to describe the cleanliness of birth before the corruption we all endure from the forces leading society.  The sense of doom is palpable.  Guest singer Cassandra Schorn aka DUFF joins Jon on the vocal work, the duo trading off back and forth throughout the song.  It works really well, providing even more atmosphere to an already great tune.  Lyrical focus is the malevolent hierarchy of society, and with lines like “they’ve tainted your brain from the very first day”, it’s a clear reference to the social conditioning that is impossible not to witness.  Armageddon is the second brand new one, and is much more typical of the crust we’ve come to expect from MISERY.  Some of the guitar riffs are very reminiscent of the song Just Never Ends.  The song builds from lyrical ideas laid out by the one before it, but becomes more specific in relation to the social control of religion.  The drums (especially the tom fills) are amazing on this tune.
The middle of this record features 2 songs from the first recording session in 1988, back when they were a 5-piece.  Midnight features Al Long, for the first time on a MISERY song since he left to work with NAUSEA.  Just like the original, the music is slow and doomsy as all hell.  It’s clear that the band worked some new ideas into the mix, which gives the song an updated feel to it.  In all reality, things are just as bleak as they were back then, but instead of worrying about atomic warfare, we now must face the looming doom of enslavement of the human species.  Side B opens with New Year’s, another song originally recorded during the same session as Midnight, but which never made it to record until 1996.  Originally sung by Al, Gags takes over the vox and MISERY make it their own.  They do a damn good job, and just like Midnight, the song is different and yet the same, with better studio techniques this time around.
The last 2 songs are covers originally recorded by bands that were influential to MISERY.  First up is a cover of Lifeline by SACRILEGE.  Album closer is 3rd From the Sun, originally done by CHROME, and is the other song to feature the band as a 5-piece.  Gary makes a great performance on the drum kit in this one.
Artwork & layout by Andy Lefton of WAR // PLAGUE, PROVOKED, etc.
Recorded at House Of Misery Studio 2012.

this EP-LP is highly recommended, and you should kick your own ass if you dont buy it!

Here is another juicy morsel from ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES, we all know and heard of this record label and it’s consistency of putting out decent records.  Here are 13 tracks of lo-fi garage rock, in the vein of NOBUNNY and  HUNX also with a little KIMYA DAWSON mixed in. “Love At First Site” as a nice saxophone intro with a delightful piano with male and female duel vocals. This is something any musician could do honestly, record a nice family friendly album that you can play for your kids. (XbezerkerX)
