Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

NEMESIS cross the line between hardcore and heavy. With heavy drums and evil vocals with a very clean guitar sound.  NEMESIS are from Ohio with other heavy bands coming out of Ohio like INTEGRITY and RINGWORM.  I could see NEMESIS at that level someday. This debut 7 inch on HEAD2WALL RECORDS is a good start. This release has 6 bone crushing tracks. My personal favorite is “Looking Glass”, follow the bandcamp link and listen for yourself. I was lucky enough to get clear vinyl so thank you for that.

0 Book Review: Better Days A Mental Health Recovery Workbook by Craig Lewis

Craig Lewis is a Boston punk. I met him when he came to Richmond in the Spring of 2013 to do a presentation on punk rock and mental health and recovery. I was intrigued and got in touch with him before he came to town. Craig was incredibly friendly over email and we met before the presentation at a local coffee shop to talk. Craig’s compassion struck me only a few minutes into our conversation. Talking to him was like talking to a therapist- which makes sense, because Craig is a Certified Peer Specialist and works in the mental health and recovery field in Boston. What is really neat though, is that Craig is really passionate about supporting punks specifically. He comes from that culture, and cares a lot about punk.

betterdayspic

At the presentation, Craig shared his story, the good and the bad, in order to connect with the audience. The conversations that were held there were ones that happen too infrequently in punk and radical communities. Craig has a positive attitude and encouraged folks to make movement towards their own recovery.

Craig has just recently published a book- a mental health recovery workbook to be exact. The book is a tool for folks or groups of folks who want to address their mental health or addiction and take steps towards better days. The book is 8 1/2 x 11 and 82 pages long, and published by Better Days Recovery Press. The basic format is one of brief essays, and then pointed questions. It is easy to see how this workbook could be used by individuals or in group settings to spark discussion. And with 36 different topics and corresponding work sheets there is enough material in the workbook to last a decent while.

The underlying theme of the workbook is basically empowerment of the individual. Craig promotes a hands on, do-it-yourself, type of approach to mental health and recovery. But importantly, he doesn’t shun needing help from others, institutions, medication, etc. I would almost compare the book to something that might come out of the Icarus Project, a radical mental health organization. The book is a tool, and it won’t do you any good gathering dust on a shelf. It is clearly the sort of book meant to be deliberately used by people on the path of recovery and towards mental health.

For me, some mental health stuff can have a cheesy ring to it. I think it helps to know that even if my macho defense mechanisms rile up, that the person behind the book isn’t a religious person trying to convert me, and they aren’t a yuppie trying to indoctrinate me. I can lower my defenses because this is coming from Crusty Craig and he is not trying to make anyone stop being punk. He just wants everyone to be the happiest, mentally healthiest and best punk and person they can be.

Hopefully this won’t be the last we hear from Craig (I’m pretty sure he has more tours and books on the way), and hopefully this won’t be the last positive mental health book and presentation coming out of the punk community. Punks have a lot to offer each other, and we could use a good bit more of this type of positive and empowering thought being shared.

If you want to purchase the book for yourself, a friend, or a group, you can buy copies from www.betterdaysrecovery.com and you can also get in touch with Craig yourself through that website.

1 Fast Food Worker Strikes in a Southern Context

The South isn’t known for our good labor practices – and that might be an understatement.

In the Southern context labor has always looked different. Exploitation of workers has often taken a grim tone, slavery and coal mines being just two examples. I’m not giving yall Yankees or Capitalism in general an out here, both perpetuate a classist society, exploit workers out of greed, and generally benefit from the extra exploitation workers in the South put up with. But anyone from the South will tell you, exploitation down here has a different feel.

In the South, we don’t have a living context for unions- instead we have the “right to work”. The “right to work” laws are actually just anti-union and anti-labor laws with a deceptive name. While historically all states had extremely exploitative labor practices and anti-union laws, currently, the spread of “right to work” policies holds almost the entire South back in terms of labor organizing. This is just one way in which Southern workers have it worse than workers else where.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.politicalruminations.com/images/charts-graphs/right_to_work_states.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.politicalruminations.com/map-of-right-to-work-states.html&h=612&w=792&sz=38&tbnid=nx1qy2FM7aJ4OM:&tbnh=99&tbnw=128&zoom=1&usg=__b3e2cJEiingiw82Sz6XSkHO32dw=&docid=vswsn-BbuQ7KBM&sa=X&ei=1JufUtfiFZHlsATz34HABA&ved=0CD0Q9QEwAQ

Unions have been so repressed that the work to build one is really complex. There is a lot of anti-union rhetoric out there, even to the point of being included in employee training videos by giant corporations. The economy has changed since the hey day of unions, and it is difficult to imagine what a union in the South would look like now.

Well, the Fast Food Worker’s are about to show everyone one way a union can look on Thursday,  December 5th.

Reblogged from: Reclaim Turtle Island

A message from the HWY 11 Land Defenders:

“We are not giving up despite these harsh weather conditions, sacrificing time with our families, our jobs, our homes, not only to protect land, water and people but to ensure a brighter future for the next 7 generations. We are asking for more support, through road blocks to be in solidarity. This is not just an Elsipogtog issue, this is a global issue and we need to raise awareness. Show us support any way possible, sending thank you’s, road blocks, banners, even dropping by, all and every type of support is appreciated.”

ElsipogtogThe 3rd encampment in Mi’kmaq Territory, at HWY 11, which saw stand off’s between the Mi’kmaq peoples protecting the water and RCMP protecting corporate interests, is requesting widespread global support.

The Provincial Court of New Brunswick has approved an injunction which names 5 people, including “Jane” and “John Doe”, to target the HWY 11 encampment. This encampment has successfully turned away SWN vehicles and is preventing SWN from conducting seismic testing on unceded Mi’kmaq lands. Each day that SWN cannot conduct its testing, it costs the company $54, 000. SWN is once again looking to the RCMP to enforce the injunction most recently granted. At this time, the RCMP have used the injunction to target the Mi’kmaq and have set up a “check point” on HWY 11, where the RCMP stop vehicles to arrest passengers and drivers at their whim.

We remember the last time the RCMP enforced an injunction against the Mi’kmaq people. As seen historically, the RCMP will continue to enforce the violation of treaties and attack Indigenous self-determination. At this time, the RCMP are not only harassing Mi’kmaq Land Defenders and non-Native supporters, but continuing to throw them in jail. On Thursday, November 28th the Mi’kmaq again turned SWN away – declaring another day of victory. They are standing up against brutal police repression, and continued theft of Indigenous lands and ongoing colonization. Show them they are not alone!
On Monday Dec. 2nd HWY 11 Land Defenders are asking you to show your solidarity by taking action in your community. Where possible, highway shutdowns are encouraged however any action of support, such as banner drops, are welcome. #ShutDownCanada

1 The Bunny Alliance Announces Gateway to Hell Tour

  • November 27, 2013

  • · Events · News · On Tour · PE Web Zine · Radness

The Bunny Alliance will embark on the Gateway to Hell Tour this holiday travel season to demand that Delta Air Lines end its support of animal research and help stop the transport of animal to laboratories.

from The Bunny Alliance

On December 26th, the founders of The Bunny Alliance will set out on a nationwide tour to hold Delta Air Lines accountable for its role in the vivisection industry. During this Gateway to Hell Tour, The Bunny Alliance will coordinate demonstrations at every Delta U.S. airport hub and at the Delta Headquarters in Atlanta, GA, as well as organize activist trainings for each tour stop.

The Bunny Alliance is targeting Delta Air Lines because it is in a strategic partnership with Air France and is its North America representative—and Air France is one of the last commercial airlines to continue the practice of shipping animals to labs. The campaign against Delta is to demand that they force Air France to place a permanent ban on the transportation of all animals being shipped to vivisection labs across the world.

The tour demonstrations will call on Delta Air Lines to stop Air France’s transport of animals to labs, garner media attention about the role of the airlines in vivisection, and educate holiday travelers about the animal cruelty that Delta supports. Additionally, the trainings at each tour stop will teach local activists about the campaign and how they can be involved. The trainings will also include “know your rights” and other activism tips, as well as information about how to act as a legal observer and deal with law enforcement at demonstrations to keep activists safe.

The Gateway to Hell Tour is being organized by the co-founders of The Bunny Alliance, Amanda Schemkes and Jordan Ezell. Amanda and Jordan have both been involved in the animal liberation movement for several years and have extensive experience with activism tours and anti-vivisection campaigns.

The Bunny Alliance is asking for the support of the greater activism community to help make the Gateway to Hell Tour a success. People can learn more about the tour and make a donation at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-bunny-alliance-gateway-to-hell-tour. The Bunny Alliance also asks people to watch for additional tour information to be released and to get involved in the tour and broader campaign against Delta Air Lines. 0 HARD CHARGER: CHROME LORD 7”: REVIEW

  • November 26, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

a1382651252_2  HARD CHARGER have been rather active in the Canadian scene for the last nearly 8 years, having released a handful of LPs, 7″s and splits.  This is their first release for the newish label Primeval Sounds, based in Quebec City Quebec.  This band wears their influences on the sleeves of their leather jackets, and one can definitely hear a ton of old school metal in the mix.
Chrome lord is 6 trax of blazing “hold em high” thrash punk with gasoline soaked vocals, galloping drums, thrash riffs galore, and really wicked guitar solos on fully half of the songs.  The string tones provide a fuzzy warmth that not enough bands use today.  They even throw in a couple multi – vocal parts for the choruses of some of the songs.  This band really knows how to bring back the good parts of past heavy metal while cutting out and throwing away the absolute crap.
Lyrical matter on this record is maybe even more varied than the music.  The album opener, Chrome Lord, is about a heavy metal giant that’s hellbent on destruction.  Doc Ellis is a song about having to work to get by in society, even though you know it’s just a pointless waste of time.  Burn the Rich is rather self – explanatory, but does have a really awesome solo to boot as well as a band chorus.  Only The Grave is a sado – masochistic nightmare (or wet dream?), a song which has a great old school guitar solo that Lynnard Skynnard on speed would’ve been proud of.  Spitting Venom has a cool time switch on the drums throwing in to a pseudo breakdown towards the end of the song before album closer “Wolves of Bedlam” fires up.  “Wolves…” is a story of a mindless zombie nation produced by too much TV and social conditioning.  It’s filled with guitar noodling for half of the one minute that it plays.
None of these songs even reach the two minute mark (although Only the Grave gets really close).  Nope, these six songs are just really great Canadian punk filled with sweet metal goodness.  It’s nice to see solos and breakdowns in this style of punk, without layering on the cheese like some others do.

This awesome record was recorded March 2013 in Fredericton New Brunswick, and then mastered by Dan @ Mammoth Sound.

0 INTERNAL ROT: S/T CD – R: REVIEW

  • November 26, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

a4155841162_2  A new band from the midlands of England, INTERNAL ROT perform politically charged crust metal.  This is the band’s first release, with 5 solid as a rock songs to kill yer eardrums.  They play a style of crust that seems to becoming popular as of late.  Make noise, not music.
The CD starts with a very “crust core” approach via guitar and drums, which provides a taste of what will be blazing through the speakers for the better part of the next 20 minutes.  Dual vocals add more layers, covering death metal growls as well as the shrieking rage of grindcore.  Both guys on vox share the duties rather evenly in every one of the songs, adding some real complexity to the assault of INTERNAL ROT.  Drums keep a modern war crust beat covered in the stench of ages, but also reminds one of the milder side of grind (not as many blast beats).  The guitar and bass keep a groove on it all, and the bass especially shows how much it leads the songs with the intro for Inspired By Bullshit, a completely anti – religious assault with double bass blast beats and, of course, the trademark dual vocals.
The lyrics for Inspired by Bullshit are taken from real world experience of watching drug addicts become religious zealots in order to clean their shit up.  These new “warriors of christ” are just as dangerous on religion as they were on drugs, but now they feel justified in their actions.  Yet they are still weak, because they have to resort to a book to get off the drugs, instead of finding strength within themselves.  As an American, I see this bullshit every day I walk the city streets or ride the bus in Minneapolis.  The political song Internal Rot is about how political corruption makes the system rot from the inside out until nothing is left but a weak façade, ready to crumble at the slightest kick.
Another stand out lyric / song is ep title song “Wel – Fair State”, a tirade about people that abuse the welfare system (such as the Dole in UK), by declaring themselves invalids or unable to work, and make a career out of government handouts, instead of trying to improve themselves so that they can be completely independent from the spider – web social system.  Tom “Kerry King” McKenna of HELLSWORN provides a really kick ass old school thrash metal inspired guitar solo on this album closing song.
Recorded, mixed and mastered @ CM Studios Coventry by Neil Williams of ABYSMAL AUDIO.

0 Finisterre / Geraniüm – split 7″ EP Review

Finisterre-GeraniümFinisterre are a great dark hardcore band from Cologne / Germany who have had some great releases so far since 2008. This split 7″ (co-released by Contraszt! Records, Rope or Guillotine and Root Of Evil Collective) like all the others is damn impressive. Incredibly creative riffs, where the chords aren’t just banged out. You know that each one was thought through meticulously in advance. All with powerful aggression and a despairing vocal warning of the perils of life. Their sound has a real dark tormented sound but all done in a hardcore vein.

Geraniüm from Strassbourg / France musically I think have a combination of bands like Tragedy and Ekkaia. Where the music ranges from intense hardcore to dark melodic crust with real nice guitar arrangements. Definitely one of these records you want to play to your friends, in case they miss out. It should be mentioned too that the record also has a real decent screenprinted Dürer inspired cover done by tattooist Pierre Perichaud.

Refreshing, honest, real, and truly relatable in all aspects were my immediate reactions post-read. Like many other people around the world, I get sad, and have been sad for a very large portion of the 22 years that I have existed. I have no problem admitting that. Recently, I have started to be proactive in my search to finding happiness, and holding on to it with every bone, muscle, finger, breath, et cetra, that I have in my body. Coming to the realization that it wouldn’t be easy, but also accepting that my quality of life would greatly improve, made the first step in this journey seemingly effortless.

The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Fighting the Big Motherfuckin’ Sad by Adam Gnade was everything I needed to hear – or rather read – and everything I’ve ever been told (by parents, teachers, therapists, etc) in a more applicable format for myself. This zine is an anti-depression and “How-To” guide to lead you past your demons, the assholes, the dream-crushers, the “anonymous” hate mail, the obstacles, the day-to-day sadness, and most importantly, yourself.

Living a lawless life is about accepting the reality that existing is not a cakewalk for every individual. But it is also about realizing that people change, ideas change, dreams change, and learning how to adapt to these changes as well as use them as a tool in your eventual success is the most important thing you can do for yourself.

This zine may not be helpful or relatable to everyone out there who is living with depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders. And it didn’t, by any means, make my problems go away. But it made me have a lot of “A-Ha” moments, or moments where I thought to myself, “This is me. This is totally me.” I will definitely be returning to this zine when I have my own “Big Motherfuckin Sad” episodes, and probably even just for general interest purposes. (XurkelX)
