Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

13 Rural Punk Magazine Call Out For Submissions

  • November 15, 2013
  • by Comrade Black
  • · PE Web Zine · Radness · Uncategorized
Hey You! Rural Punk! We are creating a magazine just for us, the rural punks, back to the land skids, backwoods anarchists, etc! The Country Grind is a smokin’ new quarterly magazine specifically for those folks who have ran away from the cities in search of a simpler, saner, and more fulfilling life. All content is written by fellow rural punks and is intended for a rural punk audience. Whether you live in a small town, deep in the bush, on a farm in the prairies, or tucked away in the mountains. Whether you’re on grid or off. A vegan gardener or a hunter/trapper. You’re a lone wolf or you’ve got a spouse and kids. As long as you’re a punk* and you don’t live in a city, this magazine is for you.

We are currently looking for contributors and subscribers. We need rural punk contributors to write articles, create artwork, and help with organizing responsibilities. We’ll happily except any articles relevant to an alternative rural audience. Some upcoming articles include Reclaiming Childbirth in Rural Communities; Rural Isolation and Mental Health; DIY Oil Changes; and Adventures In Permaculture.

As far as artwork, we’re looking for pretty much anything relevant. Big or small. Full page artwork or little doodles. This isn’t some boring manifesto by some dead European beardo. This is Punk! This is Art! Let’s make it look beautiful!

The deadline for the first issue is Dec. 6Th, and I hope to have it shipped out to subscribers by the winter solstice (Dec. 21st).

The first issue (and hopefully all subsequent issues) will be 100% free to all small towns and rural addresses. City punks will have to pay, but prices are reasonable ($3-5 ppd)

If you’d like to contribute, sign up to receive the first issue, or if your interested in placing an ad (cheap ad space!) contact me at gbonegardener@gmail.com. If you’re a city punk and you’d like to buy a copy you can do so at: countrygrind.blogspot.com

Can’t wait to hear from you!

Live songs were recorded during the PUSSY RIOT benefit in their home town of New London Connecticut.  If you’re unaware, PUSSY RIOT is an all grrl Russian band that got arrested after speaking out against vladimir putin (intentionally not capitalized to signify disrespect).  They got arrested in 2011, and one or two of the members is still in there.  Apparently the women have been subjected to abuse including sexual abuse, and punx all over the world are (or should be) just as mad about them being arrested as the atrocities that happened in BANDA ACEH INDONESIA a couple years ago.
AMERICANT is an East Coast punk band from Connecticut that play aggressive HC with a hint of powerviolence.  Off the wall drumming matches the excellent guitar / bass work well, with enraged shouted vocals over it all.  Dual m / f vox on a couple songs, with entirely anarchist messages in the lyrics.  Song themes touch upon such topics as the annoyance of working, riot cops at peaceful protests, the rampant sexism of religion, a history of punk rock, the debt of the American dream, and unity.  Oh, and a tongue in cheek song about smoking.  I’m not really sure if they are anti cigs, but they definitely mention the ills of tobacco.  DON’T SMOKE – ITS FUCKING STUPID!!!! SMOKE DRUGS NOT CIGS.  Lyrics sheet is laid out like a stack of show flyers, and printed DIY on regular office paper.  Production is nice and bass heavy so ya can hear all the parts of the jig saw gnawing through the amps.  Great bass levels.  Plus the lead singer has been repeatedly seen rocking PROFANE EXISTENCE shirts! Fuck yea

Released as WILTED ROSE RECORDS #001.

“Once in awhile, something truly inspirational comes from southeastern Connecticut. These four bright and talented young people are going to change the face of music for the better for generations to come. Sure, they may be a little rough around the edges and drop a few f-bombs now and again, but what they lack in social norms they make up for with that special kind of spark that can lead us all to a better place. The kind of place we have dreampt of since our youth where anything is possible. That special place where, at least for a few moments, we are completely free from all the things that have held us back and tired our weary bones.” —  Norm McDonald of SNL (?)

0 FILTHY CHARITY / THE BUTCHER PROJECT: SPLIT CD: CD-R REVIEW

  • November 10, 2013
  • by PigBastard
  • · Reviews

SPLIT  Filthy Charity start with a feedback induced intro that lulls one into a sense of comfort before the power violence comes pouring out of the speakers.  Mile a minute drums combat with blast driven guitar work.  Shouted vocals mixed with chicken screams, before the first song unexpectedly ends.  The second song starts again with a relatively long calming intro, before blasting back into the aforementioned formula.  From The Filth of Your Charity is a slowish song, with a big guitar sound and much better production than the rest of the songs.  Infact, the production for the FILTHY CHARITY side mostly seems like they used one microphone and recorded in their basement.  Crust as fuck & DIY!
The Butcher Project is much more streetpunk influenced and better produced.  Drums are much more in the mix, as are the vocals.  Chorus parts exhibit the whole band singing along to melodies, and the guitar has a much meatier tone.  This band is a lot like a bunch of other street punk / oi bands that I’m sure you’ve heard.  Dual vocals on some songs, band melodic sing alongs on chorus parts including “whoa!”, rock steady drums, and good guitar / bass tones.  If you like bands like DEFIANCE, LCB, THE UNSEEN, etc, I’m sure you will like THE BUTCHER PROJECT.
5 songs from each band.  Co-release on Enthropy, Abatos, and Neanderthal productions.  Recorded April 2012.

EXO  ALL PUNK / METAL DIE HARDS BEWARE: ELECTRONIC MUSIC
This is a French electronic band released on both RAVACHOL and SVOBODA among other distributors seemingly recorded in 2009.  All text in the booklet, including the song titles, is in French, except for the song titles Big Brother, and Microimplant.  This band is a two piece, one does the synth work / programmed drums, and the other does the guitar work and vocals.  Although I cant understand French, I do notice words here and there which make me aware that this band is anarchist in nature, and most likely advocate for an egalitarian society.  The duo seems to work well together, calling to mind such European industrial metal bands as Die Krupps among others.  no!, no Rammstein.  The music is much more in that style, although some songs do have a cheesy techno sound which I hate.  To be honest, I’m really not sure why EXOGENE or whomever was responsible, sent this for review to Profane Existence, because most punk / metal die hards would probably not approve.  I grew up listening to industrial, punk, and metal, so I actually like this.  What they do is decent, and is of a style which I thought had faded out about a decade ago.  All lyrics are in French, except the chorus for Big Brother, which is pretty self explanatory.  Booklet has some cool ufo pictures, and a band photo of the duo.  One of them is wearing a BOLTTHROWER shirt, presumably the guitarist.  This CD / band is good if you like industrial metal thats heavy on the keys.  If you cant stand electric drums or keyboards, I recommend you dont bother.

bc  HANGED, DRAWN AND QUARTERED is one of the newer albums in the PROFANE EXISTENCE store (3 vinyl copies available at time of review), received via trade from a French label RAVACHOL PRODUCTIONS / SVOBODA RECORDS.  This outfit from France formed in 2011 and currently reside in Besancon, a city in eastern France about 30 or so miles from the Switzerland border. The lyrics comment on corrupt politicians, false satanists, drinking beer, puking beer out of your ass, refusal of working so you can get drunk all day, and then again more satanism.  The band seem like a bunch of mean rowdy drunks that get off on being “more evil than thou”. Vocals hit the mid and deep range, and musically, this is all out crusty thrash metal with dual guitars and a very competent drummer.  HDQ is their first full length effort, and they’ve already got a split 7″ out with LUST FOR DEATH, a new band, also from France.  Check out the split if you like BLACK CODE, it’s in the same style but with a more recognizable crust punk based beat, and the EP is 14 + minutes long!  all material can be accessed through the bandcamp page.

Buy HANGED, DRAWN AND QUARTERED directly from the Profane Existence store! quote from PE: “BLACK CODE are a dark and heavy hardcore band from France. For fans of bands like BLACK BREATH, TRAGEDY, and MASSAKARI. They feature members of HUMAN COMPOST.”

  • November 9, 2013

COM  Four songs of sludge from Cincinatti rage through a half hour of bliss for metal heads with an affinity for long songs.  All songs featured on this album are 7:45 or longer, with the exception of title track Colony Of Machines.  The aforementioned is merely a relaxing interlude between mammoth assaults of sludge that characterize this album.. really more like a segue into the last song, or if this was put on vinyl it would act as an introduction to the B-side.  MOLLUSK is comprised of two members, one of which is credited with drums / vocals, but the level of musicianship on this album shows what monumental feats a two piece can do.  I cant really describe this as a vision from the guy credited with strings (guitar & bass), because the album wouldn’t flow without the drums.  Truly, the drumming going on here is what keeps this monster of sound from slowly drowning in the murky waters of ambiance that the melodies provide.  Gruff shouted out vocals that are rather generic in style emanate from only the compositions on the first half of this cd, the other half being purely instrumental.  Lyrics are neither provided on the bandcamp page or in the cd, so its anyones guess what the duo sing about.  Judging from the music, I’d say they deal with the decay of society into the quagmire of filth that flows through the sewers of our cities like black blood through someones veins.  It’s not really the lyrical content that the band is going for, but more for the mood and feeling that the musical mixture of distorted melodies and surging drums provides for the listener.  Highly recommended for those who like long sludge metal songs with a heavy slab of doom thrown in for good measure.  Not for everyone.Recorded at Candyland Studio by Mike Montgomery during the Spring of 2013.  Expect a sticker with purchase of CD.  or you can download for free from bandcamp.

2 Never Been So Lucky?

  • November 9, 2013

by Comrade Black Comrade PE

All my life people have been telling me how lucky I am.

There was a time in my life where I was jumped by 3 men, who held my head to the ground while one jumped up and brought his foot down; all over a hundred or so dollars. I tell people, and they tell me I am lucky. Oh so lucky to have survived. Or the time I was hit to the head with an aluminum baseball bat. So lucky.

If this is what luck is I wish I would quit getting it.

Recently I was approved for PWD (Persons With Disabilities) after years of struggling through the hoops of bureaucracy.  Sometimes when I tell people this they reply “wow you are so lucky.” “I wish I didn’t have to work for money, and could get a BC wide bus pass, free camping, and ½ off at the ferries”

Yeah, lucky…

I wake up in pain, nearly every day. When I awake my feet ache from sleep, and my back is often sore too. I deal with crippling spells of fatigue that shut me right down. If I walk too long, or go up too many stairs my knees remind me of when that drunk driver said to the cops “no, I didn’t hit him, I just drove up and he was laying here.” At the hospital as I came back to consciousness the nurse said to me “You are pretty lucky… It was pretty stupid to be riding at night without any lights.”
Dumb luck.

I deal with 4 different conditions that each manifest as different forms of chronic pain, AS, fibramialgia, soft tissue damage to my knees, and migraines. At least one of them I was assured will only get worse throughout my life, and likely will cripple me permanently. Eventually. All products of poverty, and living in the disaster we call civilization.
but hey, its ok cause I get a free bus pass… Well, actually it is $45, but still, so lucky.

When I was a kid, I was bullied in school. Although bullied doesn’t even begin to describe it accurately. Terrorized would be more honest. Daily I would get my ass smacked, or my crotch grabbed, while I was called fag, tripped, spit on and they would destroy my locker so I had to carry my binders with me all day in my book bag. They even once tore my pants off my body, in half. Tore them right off of me, and laughed. I was suicidal until I was in my mid 20s, and still struggle with depression and anxiety. When I tell people these stories they often tell me “man, you are lucky you got out of there alive.”
Apparently choosing to hitchhike across the country and live on the streets to get away from there had nothing to do with it…
It was just luck.

I find the word luck dis-empowering.
Luck implies that fate or random chance of the universe just fell in my direction.
It takes away all agency, and neutralizes participation,
As if nothing I did had anything to do with why I survived, and even thrived despite it.
I don’t think I have been lucky, I have been unlucky. But I persevered, in spite of it.

My life has been a struggle, it hasn’t been easy. Sure, I wasn’t a child soldier, or sold into sex slavery, so many others have definitely had it worse – but that doesn’t undermine my own struggles and hardships.

I survived because I fought, and had the support of friends, allies, and community.
“You’re so lucky to have such a great community.”
No, sorry, I have to disagree.
I have community because we have put in the work to make it a reality.
To build and maintain those relationships which are important.
Community, relationships, they don’t just happen accidentally.

I once read a article about sexual assault, where the author meditated about how almost every woman she knew had bad it done to them
and she kept saying “I am the lucky one, lucky it never happened to me.”
Like the drunk driver who ran over me, or the people who assaulted me, the perpetrators in her story didn’t do anything, the women were just “unlucky.” Where the fuck is agency?

We live in a world, where species go extinct every day, where forest get paved, where women are prey, where most of the world (human) population lives in poverty. Yet we are constantly told we are lucky.

Fuck luck. We need action, compassion, and empathy.
We need to quit giving up our agency, and most importantly, to take responsibility.
And never be so lucky

In times like these we need a band that takes all that is good about punk and metal and combines it into something amazing! Something that is raw and tight and dark and energetic and destructive all at the same time then combining that with lyrics that matter. Lyrics that speak to both the personal and political nature to this world in which we live. That band is called WE MUST DISMANTLE ALL THIS! and they just released an incredible new LP called “Decathect”. It’s been on heavy rotation here at the PE warehouse. We took a moment to sit down with the band and do an interview with them so that everyone else can see what they are all about.

PE: Lets start with the old standard: how did WMDAT! come about? All of you were doing separate bands before Justin moved to Champaign-Urbana from Milwaukee.

WMDAT: In 2007, Justin, who played in Avoided, was set to play second guitar for Sali and Greg’s drunken, depraved street-punk band Carbomb Lottery. Carbomb broke up before Justin could join and we started Dismantle afterward. Our first practice space was Austin’s tiny, unfurnished room in the basement of a punk house – he had nothing in there but beer cans and a blanket. We kicked his shit out of the way, set up, and then realized he should probably join and play lead guitar – even at 18, he was a sick metal guitarist. Chris’ crappy metalcore band at the time played that house and we recruited him after watching him bolt out black-metal, tortured screams. Chris ended up singing and cutting off 7 years of his life to debauchery and sleepless nights thanks to our collective insanity – Chris loves us for it.

PE: What do you think has been the impetus for the band’s evolution over the years? Early on you had much more of a street punk mixed with thrash metal feel, and nowadays you guys are pretty much an “epic crust” band (though I hate putting labels on a group with so many different influences).

WMDAT: Everyone’s self-evolution has contributed to the bands evolution, be it expanding musical tastes or different aspects of everyone’s personal lives. The D-beat style we now play came out of deepening our appreciation for Scandinavian crust and battling demons – the loss of close friends, addiction, hopelessness, and capitalist culture. The dark melodic style we play now is a better voice for our fears, angers, and frustrations.

PE: Though you guys are all punks, metal clearly has a huge influence on your sound – and Austin is a dyed-in-the-wool metalhead. Who do you think has influenced you the most from the genre, and what are some of your favorite bands? Does it ever feel like you’re cheating on your wife punk with your mistress metal, playing some of these riffs?

WMDAT: Austin is certainly the metalhead in the band. He grew up obsessed with Metallica’s first 4 albums and it was all downhill from there. Justin’s love of punk and thrash challenged Austin as a guitar player and they ended up feeding off each other very well. Justin will write something and Austin can almost immediately find something that sounds cool over it. Our genre mashing results in some pretty sick riffs. We are all influenced by different styles (e.g. Justin: Tragedy, Martrydod, Passiv Dodshjalp, Krum Bums; Sali: Disfear, Anti-Cimex, Iron Maiden, Nausea, World Burns To Death; Chris: Darkest Hour, Tragedy, Total Abuse, Raw Nerve, Tenement, Grave Babies; Greg: Mariah Carrey, N SYNC, and, in general, Puruvian dance hall pop-disco unlimited).

PE: Your lyrics are pretty personal yet also fairly political in nature. They’re also fucking depressing as shit. What goes into the creation of such tormented writing? Chris, being a carnivore, how do you feel about singing some stanchly vegan lyrics at times?

WMDAT: We write about what seems to be destroying people and ourselves, in particular, the consequences of internalizing values esteemed by a capitalist system (selfishness, greed, inequality, murder, and so on), which infect our ability to be autonomous and develop truly loving relations with people and our environment. Sometimes this translates into expressing pure hatred and depression, and sometimes it helps us fight and find possible solutions. The system’s disgusting nature lives in all of us – mostly, it shapes what we find valuable and justifies actions we do but sometimes can’t fucking stand – and so we tend to write personal songs about our experiences that illuminate the killing fields of the system. Chris sings our songs about militant veganism because he’s flexible enough to hate himself – we should all thank him for this. He understands why we disagree with the commodification of slaughter and cruelty towards living creatures, but since he’s a pretty sexy dude so we’re not gonna give him too much shit.

PE: WMDAT! are confirmed road-dogs. What were some of your best shows/venues/cities? Any crazy stories that you can reveal without getting arrested?

PE: Tour has been kind to us over the years. We’ve been to most states numerous times, and we’ve met some unbelievably inspiring, loving, and supportive people, which has really helped us understand ourselves, our music, our collective problems, and our collective advances. The show, the people, and the interactions after the show and the next day all make a huge impact on us – after all, tour is 23 ½ hours a day developing relations with others. Some of our favorite places have been Appleton, WI; Amarillo and Dallas, TX; Binghamton, NY; Providence, RI; and East Bay and Sacramento, CA. A few insane shows stick out. One is our second show in Las Vegas in a little taco joint on the east side. We were two songs into the set and the pit erupted and a group of kids smashed someone’s head open. The taco joint pulled the plug on the show and we were left loading out dodging pools of blood on the floor. Another show that comes to mind is last year in Binghamton, NY. A small living room show packed to the brim with redneck crusties begging for some heavy music. The crowd went insane – people hanging from the ceiling, jumping from this little makeshift bar head first into a crowd of people. We then proceeded to get into fights (nothing serious, just some fools who were being assholes in the pit), break into an abandoned masonic temple, get lost in said temple for almost 3 hours, booty dance, Depth Charge (if you don’t know, you don’t know), and general craziness.

WMDAT: Many of the band have lived in Champaign-Urbana for a good deal of time and have differing perspectives on the punk scene in town. Having lived here myself for over a decade, it has certainly been cyclical and at times disappointing, other times fantastic. What are your thoughts about it?

PE: The first few years we were together, there were sick houses to play, shows every weekend, strong support for local and touring punk bands, and a powerful sense of community. In the last few years, there has been a general disappearance of a crowd that is passionate about hardcore punk. There are many kinds of bands and strong local support as a whole, but only a handful of people into punk. Nonetheless, the punk scene ain’t dead, and we’re far from letting C-U live without some nice, dirty crust.

PE: Justin/Prof. Remhof just got a teaching job in Santa Clara, CA. What’s the future for the band now that he’s gone long-distance?

WMDAT: Mostly the band tells Justin to fuck off, leave his career, and live in a shitty 1999 F250 Ford Cargo Van with the band until everyone’s health deteriorates to the point of welcome, creative despair … or we plan to continue playing and touring in summers, and we’re working on filling the spot for shows during the school year. Until then, Austin will continue to cry himself to sleep each night with a broken heart.

PE: What are all of you up to in your spare time away from WMDAT!? I know all of you have different bands and projects you’re working on.

WMDAT: Sali lives in Indianapolis and spends most of her time running Dead Rodent Records, a screen printing business, and playing in This Is The Enemy. Justin lives in San Jose, teaches philosophy full-time, and has recently joined the grind/powerviolence band Buried at Birth on Give Praise Records. Chris is in Gnargoyle, repping 80’s skate punk/hardcore – recordings coming soon. He is also busy working towards a computer science degree and so has very little time to do anything but the nerdiest of homework. Austin has taken over Justin’s vocal duties for the band Unnerve that he sang for here in Champaign. He loves playing guitar but nothing helps with stress like screaming in peoples faces. Greg drums for Unnerve, and, since he wasn’t able to get his replies for this interview to us on time, we will say that he spends most of his time eating the heads of rare birds, studying locust migration patterns in the South Pacific, and drinking gallons of Four Loko (one of those is not a lie).

PE: That’s about it. Shout-outs and fuck-offs?

WMDAT: Shout out to Ben from Profane for being an ugly helper of a beast. Shout out to all of you who have let us play your house (ripped it apart and put it together again), cuddle your animals (more people need goats), throw up on your floor (and buy us a 30 pack), talk about the universe (especially Pluto), and inspire us to keep writing, touring, and fighting to live well. Shout out to ice beers, cheap whiskey, broken hearts and the people that broke them, without which we may not have come up with some of the shit we’ve written. A huge fuck off to bar shows, sex and gender inequality, income disparity, and materialism.

Upon receiving this book, in all honesty, I had not a clue who this band was. I also had never read a Songbook from a band, nor did I know they even existed to this extent. The book, as a whole, was quirky, amusing, and at times I found myself thinking “Did I read that correctly?”. How anyone could come up with some of the concepts featured in their songs, nonetheless some of the wording that was used, was both intriguing and mind-boggling all at once. What I enjoyed most about this songbook was that it wasn’t just a songbook. It went well beyond lyrics and/or how to (kind of) play some of the songs. The Bobby Joe Ebola Songbook dedicates a decent amount of book space to member history, introductions to each separate grouping of songs per chapter, and occasionally a Pop-Quiz related to knowledge about the bands releases as well as their history as a band in general. I really enjoyed reading this songbook mostly because it was something I wasn’t used to reading. I had gained an opportunity to read something out of my element and I’d consider it a success. From what I have gathered, Dan Abbott and Corbett Redford have experienced some serious shit and used their experiences to create what is Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children Macnuggits. If you enjoy twisted and quirky poetry/songwriting, this book is definitely up your alley. (XurkelX)
