Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 RELENTLESS APPROACH Notorious Thugs 7″

I had no idea what to think when I pulled this out of the box. Between the cover and song titles: Who Shot Ya, Notorious Thugs and Somebody’s Gotta Die, anything could happen. Well, it’s three songs of super lo-fi, dirty punk rock and roll grit that at times seemed to pull influence from TRAGEDY and possibly EYEHATEGOD with the aggression of NAILS. I dig the style and enjoyed the songs, but a few things stood out that I wasn’t into. The sleeve was interesting, being printed on “tracing paper” and the 7″ was pressed on see though light purple, but the B side was blank. Wasted space is a huge pet peeve of mine and a little more info or a lyric sheet would have been nice. Other than that, I think it’s a really fun listen. And to top it off, I was surprised to see that it was Mastered by someone my wife and I lived with when we first moved to PDX: Brad Boatright at Audio Siege. Small world indeed. (Jake)

0 IN DEFENCE Into the Sewer LP (+2 7″s)

Man, where were these guys when I was in high school? In the mid 80s I dedicated every spare moment to skateboarding. We’d go down my buddy Chris’s mini ramp and skate our asses off listening to BLACK FLAG, DEAD KENNEDYS, CIRCLE JERKS, etc. Then I discovered thrash and shit got real! My first show was ANTHRAX, EXODUS and CELTIC FROST and everything changed. Once you get a taste of punk/thrash crossover, you can’t go back. IN DEFENCE from Minneapolis is the link to my shred-tastic youth. I now this may upset the folks in the band, but some of the writing reminds me a lot of M.O.D. Sorry, dudes, but it’s true. Not in a bad way, though. Fortunately the subject matter is way more funny than it is offensive and while they love to have a laugh, they do flirt with serious politics. Each song kills it riff after riff with solos that fill the song out without being wanky and they are usually accompanied by beautifully moshy breakdowns that I realized I was unknowingly banging my head to each and every time. There’s no way to listen to this without getting stoked. It contains the second LP and 2 7″s(in case you didn’t get that from the line I wrote above the picture). Unlike some 22 track albums that seem to drag on, you’ll want to put this on repeat, flip up the bill on your hat and circle pit around your room for hours.  When these thrashers come through your town make sure you buy them lots of pizza….er, um, burritos. Lots of burritos. (Jake)

0 JACKALS Everyday Fabric 7″

  • March 7, 2013
  • by backwoodsvegan
  • · Reviews

At first look I would have expected this to be a d-beat band. The artwork inside and out is a great big collage full of violence, oppression and death. Obviously this is my first go around with JACKALS and realized that I was sorely mistaken. While there are some elements of Scandinavian crust, they mash a few good style together to create some unique sounding hardcore. The 7″ opens with slow plodding drums, quickly being joined by guitar and bass creating a downright dreadful atmosphere. Then the vocals sere through with an animalistic yell and all hell breaks loose. All five songs are created in a similar fashion where harsh tempo changes are used to create orchestrated chaos. JACKALS would definitely appeal to fans of hardcore and power violence alike. It’s not formulaic or predictable, though. Brutal and intense would be a much more accurate way to describe them and the slightly dirty recording adds to it, though I doubt is was intentional. Each song is very political in nature and while the lyrics are short and to the point, this 7″ comes with a printout explaining the inspiration for the lyrics and sites the sources(books, lecture, news story, etc.) which include the the story of Troy Davis being murdered by the state, sexual violence and valuing profit over people. These folks are a perfect blend of intelligence and aggression. (Jake)

0 Book Review of Green Is the New Red: An Insider’s Account of a Social Movement Under Siege.

Comrade1eI like books a lot, yet it is rare that I find a book that brings together so many of the elements I look for. Green Is the New Red documents the criminalization of activists, and the history of various struggles for liberation in the face of state repression.

Will Potter is an wonderful writer, and this book is absolutely necessary. His book reads in a highly accessible language, yet asks challenging questions and tackles difficult subject matter. Will Potter is a professional writer, and it really shows. At times highly poetic, at times very personal with narratives from his own life experiences, breaking between analysis, documenting history, and then back to personal anecdotes and stories of listening to punk rock albums with Jake Conroy (SHAC 7), or walking through the forest with Daniel McGowen the day before he was to go to jail as a ‘terrorist’.

His story begins with the FBI coming to Potter’s door and threatening to place him on a terrorist list after he goes leafleting with some friends in a campaign against a multinational animal testing lab, HLS.  Potter deals with his fears

and mistakes with a striking honesty and humility that allows you to relate to his experience, rather than the macho posturing typical of many activists. Potter uses his own story as a jumping off point to bring the reader on a journey that will introduce them to the struggles of many of his friends and other activists as they go through court battles, police raids, and prison. He places all of this in a historical context by showing t

flyer from a talk given by Will Potter and Jake Conroy

he connection to McCarthy era  repression, as well as the earlier criminalization faced by anarchists and socialists during the turn of the century.  This book contains so much excellent history that it would be worth reading it for that alone; from the beginning of one of the most effective animal rights campaigns ever (SHAC), stories of activists shutting down breeders who supply animals for labs, to the founding of the ALF and ELF, and activists like Judi Bari who was car bombed by the FBI. Will exposes how industry controls the development of legislation that will be used to imprison activists organizing  against them, making the complex workings of the judicial and legislative systems easy to understand.

Green Is the New Red has quickly become one of my favorite books, and easy yet worthwhile read that you will learn so much from. Even better, you can get the first chapter for free as a sample simply by clicking on the link on the top of his website Green Is The New Red. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Well here is a trio of some of the best power violence bands out there today.  ACxDC hail from LA and by there name looks like a rip-off of AC/DC, but looks can be deseving ACxDC actually stands for AntiChristXDemonCore which makes perfect sense. Right? On this split 10 inch record ACxDC get 5 songs to blast through your speakers with, with very angry vocals and spastic guitar and heavy drums.  This is actually my first time listening to these guys and it’s actually really good. Angry and to the point, I know of people out there who collect ACxDC records/merch and this will be a nice addition to their collection.  Next up is MAGNUM FORCE with only 3 tracks on this record offer up more of the longer track’s which are very well put together.  This isn’t the first time I’ve heard MAGNUM FORCE, In fact BACKSLIDER came to Minneapolis and Pat from BACKSLIDER runs his own label and put out some stuff for MAGNUM FORCE so I did some trading with him and got some of there 7 inches and cassettes.  So I already knew what I was in store for.  All 3 tracks are very heavy and more towards the heavier side of power violence which to me is better.  Finally we have SEX PRISONER from Tucson, AZ.  Again this is not the first time I’ve heard SEX PRISONER I actually trades with TO LIVE A LIE before and had some of these in my distro, of course they didn’t last very long.  On this release SEX PRISONER offer up 5 tracks of there explosive tunes that are not to short but not to long gems they supply here.  All in all this is a very solid release look for it coming out towards the middle of this month on TO LIVE A LIE RECORDS. relic47-pvvii

Well holy heavy riffs batman, the first track “Oblivion’s Spring” is a fifteen minute well put together piece.  A mellow intro goes into something very dark and heavy with penetrating vocals over the guitar and pounding drums that accompany this track.  The track never strays away from the opening intro in the background.  A little into the song it slows down a bit and now it’s time to relax on this jam and just listen to the calming effect of the guitar.  Pretty soon it goes back into the opening  riff  but not for long before it gets even heavier then the first time.  With some vocals mixed in there, this is everything you’ll ever want in the first track.  Then it’s time for  “Dirge/Purgation” almost a twenty minute long heavy doomy/sludgy track.  Guitar and drum beat intro, very nice and calm to start of this song, but don’t get to into the low volumed guitar.  This tracks gets heavy and fast real quick with the pounding drums and the guitar. Taking over the song with screams/yells coming through the microphone.  This was my first time listening to ASH BORER and this wont be the last time either. If you just want to relax and turn on something where you don’t need to think about lyrics or propaganda, just sit and relax to ASH BORER. If you don’t believe me go to the labels bandcamp and take a listen. (XbezerkerX)

0 APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT – It’s Far From Fucking Over CD

  • February 17, 2013

  • · Reviews

You’ve been hiding under a rock? Maybe you been on the moon? Blatant Toys ‘R’ Us reference for the 80s kids. Are you that jerk that drinks outside and only goes in when you friend’s band is playing? These are the only reason you wouldn’t know who A.T.U. are. This cd doesn’t need to be reviewed again here, but it hit my mailbox so I’ll just add my two cents. Funny thing is, the cd player in my car would only work once every 20 or so tries and finally shit the bed when my original copy of this was in it. I actually had to physically remove the cd player and pry the A.T.U. disc out of it(leaving many horrible scratches) and replace the cd player. Fortunately I got this copy not too long after. I don’t know if this is the newly remastered copy, but I feel like it might be. The fact that the track list has a numbering discrepancy leads me to believe it might be(unless it’s just a printing error)…and the lack of awesome flaming jug sticker. Anyway…this band completely embodies everything that i love in a punk band: a fierce political agenda with no apologies and great writing. Not to mention the nice thick booklet that comes with it that has both the lyrics and explanations, plus lots of pictures. While they do cover issues that are generally covered by every other band, A.T.U. are different in their approach, and they hit local issues as well, such mountain top removal coal mining. Also, their zeal for the legalization of hemp(non drug) and cannabis deserve massive applause. Whether or not you smoke, the facts behind cannabis for medical use can’t be ignored and legalizing hemp could possibly slow climate change by leaps and bounds. Oh, and it does less damage that booze when smoked for fun, so I’ve heard(nudge nudge, wink wink, know what I mean?). Throw in sound bites from Amy Goodman and seamless progressions accompanied by Sarah’s spoken political bits that remind me of bands like OI POLLOI and CONFLICT. Please buy this for yourself, your friends, siblings and maybe a copy for local authority figures. APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT is one of the most important punk bands in existence today. (Jake)

The fact that this starts with a mid-paced battle-hymn sing-a-long is pretty deceiving. Once track 2(A Love Radio) kicks in, your ears get blasted with an explosion of angsty barroom rock and roll! Track 4 slows down a bit. Maybe it’s to give you a breather and to make sure you don’t wreck the living room. After this they slowly build up tempo and take off full speed again by Sickness, track 6. RRB leave nothing to the listeners imagination while belting out jam after jam of nasty unapologetic grit rock complete with kick ass guitar solos. Every time I listen to this CD is gets better and better and the riffs seem to pop out more and the overall writing make more sense. It wouldn’t surprise me if Tesco Vee was a fan of these guys. Even though they’re from Regina, Saskatchewan I would swear they were based in Boston, Mass. Something about the attitude and energy, I dunno, maybe the back up gang vocals? Who knows. Anyway, the artwork is fairly minimal and there’s no lyric sheet, but it well done at the same time. And to round it out, the recording and production are super clean ,but in an analog sort of way. The sound is very large for a four piece. (Jake)

0 THRANENKIND – The Elk CD

  • February 10, 2013
  • by backwoodsvegan

I threw threw this on during my drive home recently without ever having heard anything by these guys before and it couldn’t have been a better soundtrack. I live about 20 miles out of town in a heavily hilly and wooded area of Western New York. The trees are bare, with the exception of snow and/or ice and everything is calm, quiet and almost post apocalyptic. The cd starts with lush layers of beautiful guitar, playing clean and picking through chords creating a serene, but mildy oppressive atmosphere. Suddenly, distorted guitars tastefully kick in, but the mood isn’t altered. Things just get heavier. Vocals are minimal which creates an even more dramatic effect. They oddly fit, but seem like the vocalist may have been in a crust band at some point. Each song has a similar structure, but each as unique as the last. THRANENKIND is all about atmosphere, not blazing speed or brutality. They remind me a bit of WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM with out the black metal, but have a lot in common with CELESTIIAL, a “woodland doom” band from the Mid-Western U.S. Upon further investigation I found that these folks are very political and promote the vegan straightedge anarchist lifestyle. I love when political folks like these guys don’t play the expected musical style that fits their beliefs. There seem to be more and more Green Anarchist Black Metal bands popping up lately, which is awesome since I’m a huge black metal fan, but hate wading through all the sketchy bands to find the good ones. Not to mention that the production on this is perfect. No fake creepy wet dungeon recording. This is their first full length and this is a promo copy, so who knows if there will be any changes on the actual release. Oh, and my copy came with a little piece of what might be a fern in it. If you like slower atmospheric doom laden blackmetal done by people who give a shit, pick this up immediately. (Jake)

1 HARRINGTON SAINTS: Pride And Tradition: CD

  • February 8, 2013

HARRINGTON SAINTS have been around since 2005 and Pride and Tradition is their second full-length album and is produced by Lars Frederiksen from RANCID and he did a great job on it. The production is nice and clear, but gritty enough to keep the edge that this band has. Eleven tracks planted firmly in the vein of Oi and Street Punk that made me want to grab a pint, start jumping around and learn the words to shout along with on this album. You get lyrics about class warfare, getting screwed over by those rich bastards, lots of frustration, and about giving up and just rotting on the couch. This has a lot of touches of classic Oi bands, but still keeps things going without being slavishly bound to their influences. As soon as I put this album on, it just started being on of the better Street Punk and Oi albums that I’ve had the pleasure to listen to in a long time. Such great guitar leads, nice and meaty, rocking bass, the drums just going for broke, the gang vocals that would sound awesome shouted out while driving and the slightly gruff vocals really made this a great album. I now must own all of their music…damn you Californians! This is going into the collection of those that will get played a lot, a whole fucking lot! (Rick Ecker)
