Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

0 FOKKUM – Notice Yourself CDR Review

Old punks never die they just stand at the back…or try harder! This Dutch
power trio is as DIY as it gets and have a unique sound as well. The
vocals have a posi hardcore feel to them in the vein of IGNITE or UNIFORM
CHOICE while the music leans towards the d-beat side of things. This album
is super upbeat and positive from start to finish, even though they tackle
some very serious subject matter such as the oppression of women, the
horrors or eating animals and religious dominance. There’s also a nicely
done cover of DOOM’s Slave to Convention wrapping up the disc. While the
music is awesome, I’d like to bring attention to the huge list of links on
a pamphlet included in here: easily 40. Most of them are conspiracy
related and are right up my alley. We’ve got links to chemtrail sites, the
illuminati, infowars and David Icke. It’s like an information overload!
Sure, some of the sights may just be wound up kooks spouting off
craziness, but if you sift through all the wackiness, there’s some really
good information to be found. Now, being a Dutch band, I wasn’t able to
read all of the info that came with the disc, but they did translate the
lyrics into English and were nice enough to include some stickers. Check
their website for a bunch of releases and other swag. Punk effing rock.

2 THE SHAME – The Plan (Studio Sessions) CD demo

The Shame

The ShameThis little gem of a demo arrived a little while ago and it’s gotten quite a bit of airtime in the PE offices. THE SHAME are a three piece band from Tulsa, OK that features PE alumni Chad Malone (BROTHER INFERIOR,ASSEMBLY OF GOD, LARKIN, BRING DOWN THE HAMMER) on guitar and vocals.  Musically and message-wise, THE SHAME are influenced by UK ’82 Oi and streetpunk bands pulling influences from the likes of classic SHAM 69, BLITZ and THE OPPRESSED.  Generally speaking, this isn’t exactly the style of music PE is known to cover, but many of us did grow up in a time before punk split up into a million sub-genres and listening to this stirs up some nostalgia for the olden days. Lyrics give a nod to the politics historically associated with working class roots of this particular music genre, all the while saying it’s OK to have a pint and a good laugh with your friends. I would really like to see this put out on vinyl and will be sure to buy one if it does! (Dan)

0 The VARUKERS Vintage Varukers (Rare and Unreleased 1980 – 1985) CD Review

  • March 27, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

I got to see the VARUKERS once…Just once. They played Denver in 2000 or so. I thought they kicked ass, they were nice guys and they partied with us back at the Corona house until the wee hours. Good times. I was damn excited to see they were playing Chaos in Tejas this year, and then equally bummed that they had cancelled. Fuck. Getting this CD in the mail was a treat and I was excited to get this disc into my CD player but to my dismay my damned CD player broke! The piece of shit won’t turn on! It’s almost 10 years old but WHAT THE FUCK! Oh well…to the laptop! So here I have a CD that consists of demos and crappy live recordings and I can only listen to it through these tiny ass speakers. Whatever…I will not let such an obstacle hinder my punk rock mission. Right away I am stoked, demo releases are hit or miss, the sound quality often lacks and you end up disappointed. Occasionally you get turned on to some really cool shit. For the most part that is the case with this CD. Several songs on this disc are from early demos of the VARUKERS and the sound is actually really good. A couple of songs come from a very rare 7” released on a German label in 1982. In some cases better than what some bands were realign on 7” in the 80’s or even 90’s. The other 10+ songs are from a live performance in 86 and here is where we hear the expected low quality in sonic mayhem. The demo stuff is good, sometimes it’s silly, but mostly it kicks ass! Some of the lyrics are down- right ridiculous on some of that early stuff, but hell…Most of us wrote stupid lyrics when we were in our teens. It was more about the aggression, pissed off attitude and being punk rock. Look…hopefully we are all familiar with the VARUKERS and their brand of UK 82/d-beat punk rock. The VARUKERS are an essential band and have always had the ability cross over sub-genres and bring the punx together. VARUKERS mainstay and vocalist, Rat, does the liner notes giving some background to what you are listening to. This is a solid release and I am excited to have it in my possession! 6 DISRAPE Dis Nightmare Continues cassette

  • March 27, 2012

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Canada seems to be a hot bed for Dis worship and great b-beat. A couple of bands that come to mind are NAPALM RAID and DECONTROL. Well DISRAPE wastes no time and opens this 7 song tape up with a perfect cover of ‘The Nightmare Continues’. And by perfect I mean they make no attempt to put their own spin on it. If this was playing and I didn’t know better I would have just assumed it was DISCHARGE. From there they stick pretty close to the formula never really straying from what is working pretty damn well for them. The quality is pretty decent, the mix balances all of the instruments fairly well, but there a few parts here and there where it felt like the vocals could have been pushed up a bit. Lyrically they stick to the dark and bleak or as they describe their influences as “the progressive rape of mankind, the careless destruction of the world, unaccountable human rights violations, the international D-beat/Metal-Punk scenes, and the darkness the present and future holds”. There you go…I think that pretty much sums it up. Word is these Ontario d-beaters are putting out an LP soon. Based on what they have demonstrated with this tape I have to recommend keeping an eye out for the LP! (Josh Mosh)

0 NEXT VICTIM This Moment of Silence Before the Storm CD review

  • March 20, 2012

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Imagine a really dark, downtempo MARTYRDÖD with both female and what appears to be male vocals and a tribalish rhythm section that sounds like they were lifted straight from Only Theatre of Pain era CHRISTIAN DEATH. Killer. In addition, there are moments of atmospheric goth (think LYCIA) and dramatic goth-metal; nothing wrong with that. It would be difficult to overstate how dark this album is. Arrangements don’t follow anything that might be considered “song-oriented” but that really works on an album like this. The band have gifted us with a liner notes in both their native Polish as well as English translations (although at least one track is sung primarily in English). Themes seem to deal with more existential matters like the personal turmoil of surviving as an individual in a society that demands conformity to the point of banality. For fans of FALL OF EFRAFA, ICTUS, NACHTMYSTIUM, RHEA’S OBSESSION, or even the 1990s releases of Projekt Records.(Matt Indignant)

0 GOVERNMENT ISSUE s/t 12” reissue Review

  • March 20, 2012

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Classic band with a very definitive sound. This is a reissue of their self-titled album from 1986 and it’s first time in print in 20 years! When I first heard G.I. I heard the song “Teenager in a box” and fell for this band that very moment (hear this song if you haven’t). This release captures the band at a point where they have evolved into something potent and strong. They say during this recording that they approached it as a “concept album” and can see to some degree of where they were going (they eventually dropped that idea). In my opinion this was a coming of age album and really defines them as a band. GOVERNMENT ISSUE always had a specific sound that you could pick out from a crowd with good amount of catchiness and hooks in the music to bring you back for more. GI were a hardcore punk band, but without all the mayhem and noise that generally accompanies the genre. This was re-mastered by the guitarist Tom Lyle and sounds damn good! Also included are 4 bonus tracks on this slap of wax. Cheers to Doctor Strange records for re-releasing this great album. (Leffer)

0 OPPOSITION RISING aftermathematics CD review

  • March 20, 2012
  • by stinkbot
  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

Hmmm, how to describe this? The first half is fast, yet heavy metallic, studs-n-spikes hardcore. Now, where the fuck did I put my skateboard? The second half leans towards ska-core, not at all unlike MOUTH SEWN SHUT but not so crusty. Am I making any sense? The songs cover themes near to all our hearts like predatory banks (Debt Sentence), class war (The Rich are Killing the Poor), and punk scene drama (Brick by Brick). The band itself is apparently made up of veteran Boston punkers who’ve each brought their own tastes and stirred them together in this witches’ cauldron of a record. While aftermathematics is freely available for download on the band’s social networks, you can support the scene by purchasing the vinyl release from these DIY record labels that have collaborated on the release: Active Rebellion, Crash Assailant, Crawlspace, Pirates Press Recs, Riot Ska Recs, Rodent Popsicle, and Tankcrimes. Check out their website for more info. Good shit for real. (Matt Indignant)

0 ALTERNATIVE Demos 1982 12” review

  • · PE Web Zine · Reviews

ANTISOCIETY records has been putting out some very good and vital material lately. First the release of the hard-to-come by ANTISECT e.p and now this!  ALTERNATIVE hail from Scotland and don’t really need an introduction. For those of you out there not familiar, these folks are legends in the early U.K. Anarcho-punk community and have become a staple within the punk scene today. Touring with acts like CRASS, FLUX OF PINK INDIANS, THE SYSTEM, ANDY T, this gives you the gist of where we’re going musically, lyrically and ideologically. This particular record is their demo recordings from 1982 and have that classic dirge and rawness to it.  Given this was taken from some aged tapes or reels, this has some classic sounds that can only be defined as pure and genuine. Some say these guys were the Scotlands answer to CRASS and hearing their music re-enforces that to some degree. Very strong socio/political lyrics with some classic guitar hooks and driving drums to fuel your punk angst. Get this record and put it into your library of anarcho-collections. It’s a must have. 0 DIE LAST – Marzenia Zdesperowanych Romantykow LP REVIEW

DIE LAST – Marzenia Zdesperowanych Romantykow LP

Pop punk, emo, hardcore whatever you want to call it, DIE LAST is the epitome of that genre. It is poppy, catchy with emotionally sung lyrics. To be honest this band is a Polish BOY SETS FIRE. Listen to BOY SETS FIRE and imagine they are singing in Polish and you have a pretty god idea what DIE LAST sounds like. I’m sure they are big fans and are heavily influenced but it really shows. The songs are very poppy and full of treble with some sweet bass lines in the background. The vocals are are a little more gruff than BOY SETS FIRE but very similar nonetheless. I do hate to continue to compare the two bands but the similarities are astounding and find it difficult to think of anything else while listening. Although it is so similar I do find myself enjoying this record without feeling like they stole another band’s sound. The songs are well written and catchy and nice on the ears. As said prior, the lyrics are in Polish but the lyric sheet has translations for all but three of the songs for their English speaking fans. The subject matter seems pretty typical of the emo genre with poetic lines about life. They are well thought out and not very cliché making it that much more enjoyable knowing its not just meaningless dribble. All in all this is a very solid record for its genre despite it being so similar to that other band. Definitely for fans of emo or pop punk/ hardcore. (Travis Assault)

1 NAO CONFORMISMO – Basta! CD Review

NAO CONFORMISMO – Basta! CD

As I was looking at the cover artwork I was torn on what this album would sound like. The front cover gives the feeling of new punk rock with the black and red scheme with screaming child in the background which also feels like a metal album. Inside there is a statue of an angel again making it feel like a metal album. Seeing that they are from Brazil I assumed it would be something similar to SEPULTURA. Once I put it in and stopped guessing what it could sound like, I realized I was closer with my original thought of it being a modern punk record. To be more accurate, it sounds like a Latin American punk band. Living in Tucson, we have a few bands that play this style and am quite used to it. In case you are not living in the southwest or not familiar with this style it is hard to actually pinpoint what that sound is. I can’t explain it but I know it when I hear it and I hear it here. The music is mid paced punk with some really great sounding distortion and very well done production quality. The vocals are deep sung with a bit of edge to them. Not crust or death metal vocals but something like a hardcore singer. The songs are between 1-2 ½ minutes which works great with this style. The lyrics are sung in Portuguese so I am unsure what the lyrical content is. They are written in the booklet without translation. The whole thing looks amazing and seems to be self released. The overall quality is far higher than a few others I have seen released by major labels. This band plays great music and most definitely put time and money to release an amazing record. I would recommend this album to anybody that enjoys punk or hardcore. (Travis Assault)
