Making Punk A Threat Again!

  • The long awaited debut LP from NYC’s FLOWER “Hardly A Dream” is finally set to arrive.

FLOWER’s tedious approach to writing/creating/drawing their debut LP was carefully thought out and the result is a monumental anarcho punk /crust record.

“Hardly A Dream” Takes us on a bleak journey through the dark side of society. As soon as you drop the needle a dark atmosphere is immediately created with a slow intro featuring arpeggio guitar work that builds into pummeling d-beat crust. The albums vocals then leave you with a feeling of being crushed by the ever-present weight of living through our modern world of late stage capitalism that was built on the falsehoods of the so called American dream, religious hypocrisy’s, nationalism, and the greed of humankind.

FLOWER take many cues from predecessors and are most often (and rightfully so) compared to NAUSEA but they also take a heavy influence from ANTISECT, SACRILEGE & other greats. The artwork has a very RUDIMENTARY PENI feel and the record comes with an amazing 24.5 X 34.75 CRASS style poster jacket. All art work was meticulously hand drawn and overseen by the guitarist Willow in true DIY style and spirit. Willow was also cool enough to draw up a special shirt for the record release featuring an alternative PROFANE EXISTENCE backprint!

  • Finally, the third LP from AGNOSY has arrived!

    AGNOSY-cover

Dark, heavy, galloping crust from the streets of London. AGNOSY is back to present us with a ferocious beast of an album that can only be forged by the anger and frustration of living in today’s world. “When Daylight Reveals The Torture” aggressively attacks evils such the current rise of fascism and animal abuse. It intelligently and passionately touches on the Afrin invasion and the revolution in Rojava and shows nothing but utter disgust toward the arrogance of humankind’s lust for greed and power that will inevitably lead us down paths of war and environmental devastation.

AGNOSY – Live at SCUMFEST in London. 2011

While lyrically AGNOSY are much more politicly straight forward this time around than on previous releases, musically they have expanded on their sound to create a dark and moody atmosphere while at the same time staying crust as fuck. To say they know what they are doing would be an understatement from this band of vets whose members have played in HIATUS, HEALTH HAZARD, and BEGINNING OF THE END.

Long galloping intros are followed up by traditional d-beat, fierce solo’s are then meet with vicious vocals and pulverizing bass in a brilliant recording captured by Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and was mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s legendary Audiosiege. We then pressed on deluxe heavyweight 150-gram vinyl,  printed on reverse board jackets, and included an 11in x 22in gatefold insert to bring you a high quality and truly epic record.

Review by Craig Hayes from “Your Last Rites”…
    Swordwielder – System Overlord
Heavyweight punk fanatics take note: System Overlord is a fucking triumph. The long-awaited sophomore album from Gothenburg stenchcore band Swordwielder is a brooding behemoth, constructed from the filthiest and heftiest strains of punk and metal. System Overlord shimmers with apocalyptic visions, and it’s overflowing with all the grim atmospherics and intimidating intensity that defines consummate crushing crust.

Too much hype? No way… And no apologies, either. Swordwielder deal in definitive stenchcore on System Overlord, and much like their full-length debut, 2013’s Grim Visions of Battle, the band’s latest release is a knockout. Swordwielder’s harsh, gruff and dark sound owes a significant debt to old school icons like Amebix, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, and Antisect, and they mix and mangle their influences and leave ’em to rot on the battlefield.

Plenty of hammering rage drives System Overlord tracks like “Violent Revolution,” “Savage Execution” and “Cyborgs,” and thundering epics like “Corrupt Future” and “Northern Lights” exhibit subtler strengths, mixing guttural growls and clean vocals with crashing percussion and dirge-laden riffs. Connoisseurs of corpse-dragging crust will love the brute-force belligerence of “Absolute Fear,” “Nuclear Winter,” and “Second Attack,” which rain down like merciless mortar barrages. As a rule, all of System Overlord‘s mammoth tracks chug and churn with grinding muscle, while reeking of squalor and decay.

Swordwielder exudes tightly coiled aggression from start to finish here—songs rise from the ashes of desolation, and resounding calls for action and resistance ring loud. If you’re a fan of heavy-hitters like Fatum, War//Plague, Carnage, Zygome, Cancer Spreading or (insert your favorite hefty crust crew here), System Overlord‘s trampling tempo and strapping sound are bound to appeal.

2 PARASYTIC is back!

10628490_10152678247382295_1361074299131803515_nWhen a band get’s back together after disbanding we tend to use terms like “Back from the dead”. However in the case of Richmond’s PARASYTIC I don’t think that term fits. If you ask any member of the band they will say that PARASYTIC never broke up but suffered from a period of inactivity. Mainly due Nick’s aggressive tour schedule in his other bands, Ethan’s travels abroad, and Matt recently becoming a father. However after a long two-year hiatus the good news is that PARASYTIC is back. They have kept the reunion somewhat low-key while practicing old material and writing new songs. In the recent weeks however PARASYTIC let the proverbial cat out of the bag by announcing not just their long anticipated return but also a mini tour of the northeastern United States to coincide along with it.

254512_149621731777052_5224240_nFor those of you that have not heard PARASYTIC, I suggest you remedy that situation as soon as possible. PARASYTIC play an absolutely brilliant blend of metal, punk, thrash, and crust. They have been referred to as the United States answer to bands like CONCREATE SOX and THE ENGLISH DOGS. PARASYTIC’s lyrics range from animal rights, to the horrors of war, disgust at puppet politicians, human liberation and much more. With amazing riff’s, harmonizing solo’s, pounding bass, and thunderous drums, combined with Ethan’s onstage antics it is impossible to see PARASYTIC play live and not be impressed. I was fortunate enough to drive PARASYTIC on their first tour in February of 2008. We spent a few weeks on the road starting in Richmond VA and working our down the east/gulf coast all the way to Mexico City and back up the Midwest. Every night was a blast and it never got old seeing these guys play. Spending time getting to know them was even better. PARASYTIC toured extensively in the following few years playing shows all over the United States and spending a month playing the European squat circuit in 2011.

474179_302888629783694_292164437_oTonight PARASYTIC take the stage at Strange Matter in their hometown of Richmond VA for the first time in over two years. They will be joined by VISIONS OF WAR (Belgium) NO/TOMORROW (RVA/SC) SEX DWARF (Sweden) and WRATHCOBRA (Pittsburgh). On Thursday they head to New London Connecticut to begin a short mini tour. In my opinion PARASYTIC is one of the most important bands to ever come out of the United States. I for one am completely thrilled to see them active once more. It’s rare these days to see a band that is political and sincere as well as extremely talented and energetic. If you have a chance to see them at any of their upcoming shows you wont be disappointed.  LONG LIVE PARASYTIC!!!

Burnt Cross / Anthrax
Anarcho-punk is still alive and well. But this is no nostalgia trip down memory lane though, this is a more of a kick in the teeth at the state of the world today. I’m sure there is no need no introduce or say much about either band if your reading this on Profane Existence, as Anthrax have been back again for a while. And haven’t dulled or turned into some sort of housebroken mild older version. They still sound as menacing and political as ever.

Burnt Cross certainly own a few Conflict albums, as you can hear the influence throughout. And the spiralling riff in ‘Anathema (Wings Of Fear)’ is reminiscent of Rudimentary Peni. But in saying all that Burnt Cross hold their own ground and certainly hold great convictions. I also really like the new dual/back and forth vocal style happening. It is music like this that makes you get up off your knees and wreak havoc, but in a clever way.

0 OC CRUSTSTOCK and EXTINCTION OF MANKIND

OC Cruststock

So my tale begins about 15 years ago.  Believe it or not there was life before internet.  To find out about shows one had to come across an actual physical concert flyer, they didn’t get invited or alerted or notified…You were given a piece of paper with all the information of whatever shows might be coming to town.  Some people, some DIY “promoters” were better at getting fliers distributed across their town or city.  If they didn’t do a good job of getting fliers out to all the hotspots or bring them to any shows in the weeks or even months preceding the sacred date it just might mean that you missed out.  Hopefully your homies knew if you didn’t and they bothered to call you and let you know.  Again, sometimes you just missed out.  Sometimes the bands missed out too because there wasn’t anyone there, no one bothered to flyer the show…

MISERY and EXTINCTION OF MANKIND were coming to Denver and I had no idea.  I had made plans to go to Phoenix with a longtime friend to visit another longtime friend in his new digs.  He had been through re-hab and was now settled down and starting to get domesticated.  We wanted to go visit him, especially me.  When I had last saw him we were not on good terms.  He was doing a bunch of coke and we weren’t on the same page any longer.  Since I had stopped hanging out with him and his boys I was a target, they wanted to kick my ass.  Or maybe just more so him, that was the word on the “street” any way.

Eventually he moved and the immediate threat ended without coming to a head.  I moved on with life, moved to Denver and kind of forgot about him as I got caught up in the action of city life and my own new adventure.  Out of the blue one day the phone rang , I answered and was shocked that it was this dude.  We talked for hours, like it was high school again or something and forgot all the bullshit that had happened in more recent years between the two of us.  It felt good talking to him and I knew that I had to go see him as soon as possible.  And there our plans to visit our comrade in Phoenix transpired.

If memory serves me I think it was the eve before we were to start our drive to Arizona that I got a call from someone telling me that MISERY and EXTINCTION OF MANKIND were playing the next day!  What?!!  Why am I just learning of this now?!  Now I have to cancel my trip to Phoenix!  I can’t cancel.  This was an important mission, this was about old friendships and life moving forward.  But it’s MISERY and EXTINCTION OF MANKIND!…The right thing to do was to go to Phoenix, and we did.  We had a blast and relationships were mended and remain strong to this day…But I missed MISERY and EXTINCTION OF MANKIND!  FUCK!

Well years and years go by…It seemed like EOM might never come to the US again.  Every year I would wait and to see them announced on the Chaos in Tejas lineup to no avail.  And then it seemed as if the stars were aligned, they were announced for Maryland Death Fest and upon further investigation I came to understand that it was not an exclusive US date.  That had to mean they were playing Chaos in Tejas the next weekend.  Didn’t it?  No.  I waited and waited and then the rumors of no CIT started to surface, for weeks I was biting my nails and trying to get confirmation from friends in Austin.  Finally it was announced that there would be no CIT.  That was crushing, not only would I miss out on what had become a summer ritual but that meant there was no EXTINCTION OF MANKIND in my immediate future.

We started to look into MDF tickets but it was so much more expensive than CIT, especially the airfare.  On top of that were the horror stories of set times being cut short and douche bag bouncers that just didn’t “get it” being…well…douche bags.  Things looked grim.

But then like a glimpse of light cutting through the dense darkness of the deepest caverns an announcement was made that there would be an EOM tour!  Fuck yes!  I knew there wouldn’t be a Denver date but this guy was ready to travel.  With excitement I announced to the crew that we needed to pick a city to see EOM in.  We weighed the options based on price of travel and accommodations, friends that we could visit, and the possibility of catching more than one show based on their proximity to each other.

When we had narrowed it down to Portland or the Bay Area an alternative to CIT was announced…OC Cruststock!  A crust fest in Orange County!  This meant we could drive rather than fly, catch a bunch of killer bands and hang with our homies in SMD.  Word!

But the good news kept coming…before I knew it my own band (I have no qualms, I am plugging my band right here – ROÄC! [ We have an LP coming out on PE in June!]) had been added to the bill.  Through the network of solid friends and dudes in the know we had procured a spot on OC Cruststock.  Fuck yes!  I missed EOM 15 years ago but I get to share a stage with them in May.  That rules!

This is their second year throwing OC Cruststock and they have a hell of a line-up.  If Maryland Death Fest is too pricey and Punk Rock Bowling isn’t your thing, set your sites on the land of the beautiful people and get your ass to OC Cruststock!

And here is a link the blog page.  This page has ticket ordering info and more detailed info overall – http://cruststock.blog.com/2014/03/19/qu/

With ANTISECT having to cancel their tour it has been said that a headliner for Saturday is still going to be announced.  Regardless you still get EOM, ISKRA, AGAINST EMPIRE, ALL SYSTEMS FAIL, APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT, DEATHWISH and more!!!

See you in OC!

Well, exciting thing are happening around the Doomed Society camp: new shirts, a new episode, and this soup I just ate was pretty delicious.

This week on the show I have a wide variety of crap for you. Some hard D-beat, a tribute to Mortarhate Records, a tribute to the All The Madmen 2013 singles series, some super driving MotorCrust, and a tribute to the late Dave Gregg of DOA. All that and a whole lot more.

1 Positive Stench – There’s More To Living Than meets The Eye

by Comrade BlackComrade PE

Most people would probably not use the word Posi to describe the band Amebix; but I would argue that despite their dark aesthetic they are actually a posi band.

Amebix – often called the first crust punk band with their dark artwork, sound and lyrics; would often sing about death, dying, nuclear Armageddon and the impeding apocalypse, yet there always remains a spark of hope in their lyrics and a message that this dystopia doesn’t have to be if we choose to stop it. With lyrics like:

“And when I’m dead
And when I’m gone
There will be one child born
And a world will carry on”
(Amebix, “The Darkest Hour”)

or

“So drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die
It’s better to laugh than it is to cry
Live for life’s sake, don’t let life pass you by
There’s more worth living for than meets the eye”
(Amebix, “Drink and Be Merry”)

The message of hope and resistance is a key component to their lyrics. Their message is anything but defeatist. If we compare this to the lyrics and content of a lot of prominent sXe hardcore bands which would normally be characterized as Posi, such as Mindset – I believe you will find the message is similar in some very important ways:

“I fuck up, you fuck up, we all fuck up
We all fuck up!
I fuck up, you fuck up, we all fuck up
We all fuck up!
Get over it, I’ve had enough.
Your attitude really sucks.
Oh man, it looks like you fucked up.
Get over it and get back up”
(Mindset, “You Only Fail When You Stop Trying”)

or

“I’m no pawn, And I wont play this game The end result is always the same. Break the cycle make my own way. Tomorrow can be a better day. Break the cycle. No turning back. Always moving, always growing, always looking ahead.”
(Mindset, “Tradition Dies Here”)

Or bands like  R.A.M.B.O. which brings together all the elements of sXe hardcore and dark anarchist crust:

“it will never happen dismissed as childish
just another idealist
condescend all you want
circle that @ motherfucker
you’re too cool for politics
i’d rather live a fantasy than what you think is real
if i can dream it then why should i try for anything less”
(r.a.m.b.o., “Circle That A Motherfucker!”)

“They might have won the battle but the war’s not yet won
messenger bag full of bricks gonna have some fun
you may never smash the state
but at least you can give it a good smack
may not accomplish anything
but at least i try
better than the other option roll over and die!”
(R.A.M.B.O., “Smack The State”)

All of these bands might seem very different at first, but the more you look the more they share many similarities: the content of their lyrics is actually quite similar; often hitting themes such as anti-christian/religious ideals, and lyrics rejecting mainstream values which they see as self induced slavery. All bands primarily played in small venues to small crowds of disenfranchised kids like themselves rather than trying to make it big in the shitshow we call rock and or roll. But most importantly in all cases their lyrics tend to be angry yet have a positive message. They don’t ignore or diminish the problems, far from it, they sing about what concerns them, but come out calling on people to stand up to the bullshit and not let it keep you down. This is what Posi means.

These tenancies run through much of crust music, almost as much as they do through Hardcore. But that only makes sense – all of these countercultures were founded in DIY, in resistance to mainstream norms and expectations. All were founded in the ideal that we don’t need to accept the death we have been served for dinner, we don’t need to “eat shit and say thank you for the privilege” – despite what we are told we know a better world is possible but only if we are willing to do the fucking work ourselves. Aint no politician gonna do it for us. DIY punk, straightedge hardcore, crust, anarchism are all attempts at building community on our own terms. They might look or sound different, but who fucking cares!?!

More and more these days they seems to be a coming together and overlapping. I am an example of this as a vegan straightedge crustpunk who is a green anarchist and former street kid. I know more and more sober or straightedge crust punks and anarchists these days. I find this exciting and in it I see possibility. This of course doesn’t mean the rest of the world isn’t turning to shit, but rather that we are not going to passively accept it and submit.

If there is a benefit to all this, it is that maybe we can learn from each other, and in turn all grow stronger together. Both crust and hardcore have been extremely huge influences on my life in very positive ways. They are the reason I didn’t kill myself when I was younger and was a target of bullying, harassment, and other violence (including self violence). Crust and anarcho-punk helped me understand that there is systemic reasons why I was being targeted and that I didn’t need to assimilate to bullshit values. SxE helped me quit drinking – which in turn probably saved my life. One of the most important things I learned from straightedge was to stay posi no matter how shitty it gets. I am sure Amebix would agree.

“Live for life’s sake, don’t let life pass you by
There’s more worth living for than meets the eye”

Stay crusty, and stay Posi yo!

“The self-riteousness of judgement is something that no human being has the luxury to pass.
Every single one of us survive at the expense of other living things.
Although our very existence contradicts our effects our struggle is still relevant in relieving the burdens that we create, but our involvment is based on individual beliefs and ambitions.
Hope needs to be nurtured, compassion and understanding
will not grow out of scrutiny.
Encouragement and tolerance is the
only way that activism will evolve from indifference.”

Image Discourage is a new 3-piece from Columbia South Carolina that play political as all hell fuckin punk rock.  this is urgent anarcho-punk that has intricate riffage and complex drumming with anguished lyrics over the top of it all.  At times mid-paced and suddenly bashing into fast paced yet melodic parts and layered with dual vocals on some parts.  the lyrics package is a very DIY zine full of riot footage from around the world, and calloused lyrics about the protest movements in the States.  one song mentions how SOME people at the Occupy movement thought they were beating the cops by playing Leftover Crack and drinking in the park.  This is a call to direct action from the United States of Apathy. very solid demo from the Amerikkkan southeast.

every once in a while I get something to review that is a real gem in the underground punk scene.  when I first picked this CD up, I thought it was a zine because of the package.  the cover art is a hand drawn collage of some political statement about Obama.  inside is a Gee Voucher style mini-poster that would be really cool if it was full size.  the track listing is layed out like a table of contents, which also make it seem like a zine.  highly political lyrics in the pages following cover most anarcho-punk topics, and although they dont mention any womyns topics, Planned Parenthood is mentioned in the Groups to Support section.  The CD is 25 songs of Subhumans / Citizen Fish style punk rock with elements of Rudimentary Peni and some reggae dub songs like the mellower side of Conflict or Bad Brains.  top notch crisp and clear production with snotty English accent vocals.  the art on the back cover is a chimpanzee holding a human skulland laughing at it while a bomb explosion is seen in the background, kind of like saying “you had it coming motherfucker!”  this band should bring St Louis back into the spotlight, and I really hope they will come play in Minneapolis! released on their own DIY label Recluse Records, and UK based Active Distribution.  a real gem.

1. Victoria Anarchist Bookfair Dates & Contacts

September 14th and 15th, 2013
Fernwood NRG Community Hall

1240 Gladstone Ave, Victoria, BC, Coast Salish Territories info@victoriaanarchistbookfair.ca

We are pleased to announce the eighth annual Victoria Anarchist Bookfair, located on unceded Coast Salish Territory in Victoria, British Columbia. The Bookfair is for anarchists and non-anarchists, with participants from all over North America and beyond. Events include book and information tables, workshops, readings, films, presentations, and much more!

The Bookfair always includes workshops on a wide range of topics. We seek to introduce anarchism to the public, foster dialogue between various political traditions, and create radical, inclusive, and anti-oppressive spaces. Participants with different visions, practices, and traditions are welcome.

Our theme this year is Eco-Defense. We aim to highlight various environmental threats and the resistance movements that have formed against them. From logging of old growth to oil development to mining, we will analyze resource-extraction from an anti-capitalist and anti-colonial perspective. We will explore how the Indigenous and settler populations can share responsibility for the challenges at hand. We aim to move beyond critique and chart creative paths toward healing the planet.

As part of Anarchy 101, we require presenters on anarchist history and associated radical theories. We also aim to provide a mix of workshops that show the breadth of issues and the diversity of opinion within anarchism. Thus, we are seeking presentations on topics of colonialism, decolonization, gender, sexuality, ‘race’, disability, food security, spirituality, feminism, class struggles, poverty and homelessness, animal liberation, primitivism, DIY, militancy, pacifism, anarchism in practice — as well as topics that connect any number of these. Whether it’s a practice-presentation, participatory demonstration, panel discussion, facilitated discussion, and everything in between — if you have an idea for a workshop, we want to hear about it!

Please consult our Statement of Principles before sending your proposal.

This year’s deadline has been extended to July 31st, 2013.

2. How to Request a Table for Sept 14 & 15

The heart of the Bookfair is the main room including booksellers, distributors, independent presses and activist groups from all over BC, North America, and abroad. If you’d like to table this year, please provide a short description of your group and the materials you intend to distribute at the Bookfair.

There is no fee for tabling at the Bookfair, but we will be requesting 10% of sales after expenses in order to help us cover the costs of the venue rental.

The deadline to request a table is July 31, 2013 (we cannot guarantee inclusion on the poster or in our program-zine for late submissions).

3. Workshops & Presentations Proposals: for Sept 14 & 15

The Bookfair organizing collective is currently seeking workshop and presentation proposals. They may be aimed at people who are curious about, or new to anarchist ideas and radical practices, or they might address a topic in some depth intended for people who are already familiar with the anarchist tradition, radical activism, or anti-oppressive practices.

Standard Bookfair workshops last for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break in between. While we are open to a variety of workshop formats, and we recommend that facilitators leave at least 20 minutes for discussion at the end of their presentations. Each year we get a lot of submissions, but if we don’t have space at the Bookfair, we still want to help make your workshop happen!

Please provide a title, and short description of the workshop’s content in your submission. If your workshop is accepted, this information will be reprinted in the program zine.

NOTE: The deadline for all workshop and presentation proposals is July 31, 2013 (after that date we cannot guarantee a timeslot at the Bookfair or inclusion in our program-zine for late submissions).

4. Festival of Anarchy Events: Sept 5–14 (various locations TBA)

In addition to the Bookfair, a “Festival of Anarchy” will take place during the preceding week, with diverse anarchist-themed events occurring at different venues in Victoria. You can propose any type of event or activity: the only limit is your imagination.

Festival of Anarchy events are organized autonomously from the Bookfair and, as such, venues are the responsibility of Event Organizers—that’s you!

The Bookfair collective acts as a hub to promote and coordinate these events. We’re committed to helping promote autonomous festival events to the best of our ability through the program zine and the website.

If you’re interested in having us promote your event, please provide a title and short description of your program by July 31, 2013 so that we can include it in our zine and on our website.

We strongly recommend Festival Events are NOT scheduled during the Bookfair’s operating hours. In general, contacting the Bookfair Collective about scheduling dates before our proposal deadline is a useful way to ensure the least number of event conflicts.
